Frequently asked questions about emergency dental care in Far Headingley
I have a toothache, what can I do?
Call our dentists if you are suffering from toothache and book an appointment (or discuss registering with us). Take some over the counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, taking care to read the label first, follow the recommended dosage and avoid going over the maximum dose.
I have facial swelling, what can I do?
Facial swelling can be caused by infection in your teeth or gums. There might be an abscess that has to be drained. An infected swelling would usually feel quite tender and warm to the touch. Arrange an appointment with a dentist immediately so you could be accurately diagnosed. Antibiotics may need to be prescribed and taken before treatment can be completed.
One of my dental crowns has come off, can you help?
Keep your crown clean and secure and bring it to your emergency dental appointment. Our dentists will examine the tooth and will advise whether or not any treatment is required before re-cementing or replacing the crown.
What would you advise if I have broken my denture?
Most broken dentures are easy to repair by your dentist or a dental laboratory technician. Keep your denture clean and safe and bring it with you to your dental appointment. Do not attempt to repair the denture yourself as this can cause more damage and make it more expensive to repair.
I have injured my teeth, what can I do?
If you have had an accident and have damaged your teeth, contact us immediately for advice. These can often be very painful and may involve extruded, fractured and lost teeth should be treated by a dental professional.
I have lost teeth in an accident, what should I do?
If a tooth has been knocked out by trauma, clean it and remove any dirt by washing it in cold fresh water. Do not handle the root(s) as this could damage them. If you feel confident to do so, try to put the clean tooth back in its socket (the correct way around) as it may be possible to re-implant the tooth within 30 minutes of injury.Alternatively store the tooth inside a glass of cold milk, book a dental appointment and bring the tooth with you.
My teeth are extruded (pushed out of place), can you help?
If a tooth or teeth have been pushed out of place, you should apply light finger pressure in order to reposition it to its normal alignment. Do not force it back into its socket. Use a clean tissue to hold the tooth in its place and immediately arrange to see a dentist.
I have broken or fractured a tooth or teeth, can I see an emergency dentist?
Treatment of broken or fractured teeth is dependent on how serious it is. If it is painful, book an appointment to see a dentist here in Far Headingley. Most simple fractures can be restored using composites. If there is damage to your enamel, dentin or pulp. A permanent crown may be required if there is no permanent damage to the pulp. But if there were damage to it, then you would need further treatment. Severe fractures would mean that the tooth is traumatised and there is little chance of recovery and the tooth may need to be removed and replaced. This can be with a dental bridge, denture or dental implant. If your teeth, tongue, gums or lips are bleeding due to puncture, lacerations or tears, you will need to have this treated.
Why can’t my dentist clean and polish my teeth?
Your dentist can provide this service, however, the dental hygienist is experienced in this area. An effective clean takes time and whilst some people have very good oral hygiene and only require a simple clean that their dentist can provide, others need longer in the dental chair.
What does a dental hygienist do?
Dental hygienists regularly provide professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar. This, combined with oral hygiene instruction so that you can look after your teeth and gums properly at home, will help you maintain a healthy mouth. A clean and healthy mouth will reduce the need for dental treatment, help prevent bad breath and enhance your confidence and reduce embarrassment.
What does a dental therapist do?
A hygiene therapist is a clinical member of the dental team, trained as a hygienist with extended duties. These include carrying out all types of fillings on all teeth, and pulp therapies, crowns, and extractions on deciduous teeth. There is a strong preventative approach also including applying fluoride varnish and fissure sealants, giving oral hygiene and diet advice to prevent and reduce the incidence of dental caries / decay. These non-invasive preventive treatments are an excellent way to introduce young children to dental treatment and gain their trust and confidence, whilst instilling good habits early. Therapists can also receive extra training to carry out teeth whitening.
