"The welcome and friendliness from all the staff at the practice is great.  The surroundings are lovely and always spotless.  At my recent visit I was seen in the new upstairs treatment room - a lovely environment to be treated.  I have only had routine examinations and scale and polish in recent years but I always feel like I am given plenty of time to discuss any concerns."

Hygiene treatment in Weetwood

Cleaner teeth

Once you have been examined by a dentist to check your oral health, you can book a hygiene appointment for a clean and polish whenever you want. Patients have said that regular appointments with the dental hygienist have helped improve their confidence by having a cleaner, fresher mouth.

If you suffer from heavily stained teeth caused by smoking, your diet or consumption of red wine, tea and coffee, we provide a deep cleaning service that is highly effective at removing teeth staining and helping whiten them in one visit.

Preventative care for healthy gums and teeth

Our dental hygienist works alongside our dentists to help provide important preventative advice and treatment to help patients with gum problems or who simply need extra time and advice on looking after their gums and teeth. The treatment carried out by the dental hygienist includes removal of plaque and calculus that is difficult to remove by brushing and flossing alone.

Sometimes patients might need additional help to prevent gum disease and tooth decay. This is when your dentist may prescribe prolonged gum treatment (PGT) over a series of dental hygiene visits. This dental treatment combined with oral care advice can help stabilise gum disease.

Banish bad breath for good

Bad breath is often caused by poor oral hygiene, as bacteria build up in your mouth, particularly from food stuck between teeth, releasing unpleasant gases. It can also signal gum disease or be triggered by smoking, alcohol, certain foods, illness, or medication.

The good news is that bad breath is usually treatable with a positive dental hygiene routine. Our dental hygienist can thoroughly clean and polish your teeth, removing plaque and calculus where bacteria thrive. You’ll also receive tailored oral hygiene advice, including guidance on diet, the effects of smoking, and how to maintain your oral health at home.

To help prevent bad breath, a range of oral health products can support your routine. Your hygienist will recommend the best toothbrush, floss, intraoral brushes, toothpaste, and mouthwashes for your needs.

Our team

Direct Access to our dental hygienist

If you are not registered with our dental practice but you would like to benefit from our dental hygienist services, you can now book a direct access dental hygiene appointment.

Our hygiene therapist is able to carry out dental hygiene treatments without the prescription from a dentist. Please be aware though that a hygiene visit does not include a dental examination. You should always continue to have regular dental examinations with a dentist.

If our hygienist notices something during your appointment that they feel needs a dentist’s advice, they will advise you to make an appointment with your dentist. If you are not currently registered with a dentist and wish to register with Leeds Wellness Dental Implant & Aesthetic Care, you can speak to any member of our team who can help.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about dental hygiene

Why can’t my dentist clean and polish my teeth?

Your dentist can provide this service, however, the dental hygienist is experienced in this area. An effective clean takes time and whilst some people have very good oral hygiene and only require a simple clean that their dentist can provide, others need longer in the dental chair.

What does a dental hygienist do?

Dental hygienists regularly provide professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar. This, combined with oral hygiene instruction so that you can  look after your teeth and gums properly at home, will help you maintain a healthy mouth. A clean and healthy mouth will reduce the need for dental treatment, help prevent bad breath and enhance your confidence and reduce embarrassment.

What does a dental therapist do?

A hygiene therapist is a clinical member of the dental team, trained as a hygienist with extended duties. These include carrying out all types of fillings on all teeth, and pulp therapies, crowns, and extractions on deciduous teeth. There is a strong preventative approach also including applying fluoride varnish and fissure sealants, giving oral hygiene and diet advice to prevent and reduce the incidence of dental caries / decay. These non-invasive preventive treatments are an excellent way to introduce young children to dental treatment and gain their trust and confidence, whilst instilling good habits early. Therapists can also receive extra training to carry out teeth whitening.
