Dental fillings

"Best dentist I've ever been to! Everyone who works there does an amazing job at making you feel comfortable straight away, and their expertise is clearly second to none. Since joining the practice, I've had one filling done after my previous one came off. Kim did such a good job - far better than my previous one on the NHS. Would highly recommend."

White fillings

White fillings for clear results

If you need a filling for one of your front teeth, your dentist may suggest a tooth-coloured filling so that it is less noticeable. The use of tooth-coloured fillings on back teeth is considered purely cosmetic but with modern dental composites proving very reliable, many people opt for these instead of amalgam filling.

Historically, white fillings were considered less durable than silver amalgam fillings. With significant advances in dental materials and technology there are now new materials available that are comparable to silver amalgam. These are proving to be very successful.

The life expectancy of a white filling can depend greatly on where it is in your mouth and how heavily your teeth come together when you bite. Your dental team can advise you on how long your fillings should last.

Three types of tooth filling available in Leeds

Amalgam (silver coloured) – a mixture of metals including mercury, silver, tin, and copper
Composite (tooth coloured) – powdered glass and ceramic added to a resin base. These white fillings can be a close match to your natural tooth colour
Glass Ionomer (tooth coloured) – powdered glass, which reacts chemically with your tooth and bonds to it. This is weaker than composite so is generally used on baby teeth or around the sides of teeth

"By far the best dentist I've been to! I'm usually terrified of having treatment done but Rob makes the whole experience pleasant and relaxed, let's you take breaks if you need them and makes sure you are definitely numb before going ahead! The reception staff are so friendly and welcoming too! Would definitely recommend this practice to nervous dentist goers like me!!"
"Good experience with FHDC. They usually have appointments and are flexible if you can no longer attend, and if you are running late. Their insurance or 'dental plan' option is very handy, especially as private dental fees can be a bit eye wateringly expensive."
"This is my second feedback here having just undergone a lengthier treatment. I've been a patient at FHDC for many years and all remains excellent especially as regards recent work. I continue to be impressed with the attention and professionalism of the team and with their communication and management of the treatment plan. The surgery itself is at a convenient location with plenty of on site parking, the reception and general feel is relaxing and friendly. The dental care has always been excellent with clear information and options. Highly recommend. Many thanks."
"Best dental practice I've ever been to! Having to go to the dentist has always made me anxious but not anymore. My dentist Kim is so friendly and always makes me feel at ease and that I'm well taken care of! The rest of the staff are all welcoming and friendly. I highly recommend this place!"
"So far (ongoing treatment) I have had a very good experience with Far Headingley Dental Care. All staff (reception to dentist) are very polite, nice and great at making you feel at ease. Dr Chris Tan has spent time explaining her thinking and decision making and always given me all the options, prices and her professional opinion in advance so that I could make an informed choice. She was honest about the likelihood of success of the treatment and I felt in good hands throughout my last two sessions. I would highly recommend this dental practice."
FAQs

Frequently asked questions about dental fillings

How do I know if I need a filling?

You may need a filling if you have tooth sensitivity, pain when eating, or visible holes or dark spots on your teeth. Your dentist will confirm this during a check-up here in Far Headingley.

Is it worth replacing my amalgam fillings with white ones?

Whilst you may prefer to have white coloured fillings it is usually best to change fillings only when your dentist decides that an old filling needs replacing. You can then ask to have it replaced with a tooth coloured material. Removing old fillings is a mechanical process (using the dental drill) and whilst your dentist will try and avoid removing any of your remaining tooth, this is not always possible. Most dentists would prefer to try and maintain as many healthy teeth as possible. There are however cases where patients feel that the benefits of having more Aestheticsally pleasing teeth is worth it. Your dentist will be happy to discuss this with you.

Are there any alternatives to dental fillings?

There are alternatives such as dental crowns and dental inlays, although they can cost a lot more than fillings. Dental veneers can also be used on front teeth instead of crowns or fillings. It is also possible to have the tooth extracted.

How long do fillings last?

The lifespan of a filling depends on the material used and your oral care habits. Composite fillings last around 5 to 10 years, while amalgam and gold fillings can last longer.

Can a filling fall out?

Yes, fillings can loosen or fall out over time due to wear or biting hard foods. If this happens, contact your dentist for a replacement.
